Roberto Cavalli was born in 1940 in Florence, Italy into an artistic family. His grandfather was a renowned painter and member of the Macchiaoli movement, whose work is now exhibited in the Uffizi Gallery, and his mother was a seamstress, which inspired him to also embark on a creative career that would later redefine the boundaries of contemporary fashion.

Cavalli’s journey into the world of fashion began in the early 1970s, a time of cultural upheaval and sartorial experimentation. He enrolled at the Academy of Art in Florence, focusing on textile print and applications. During the early ’70s, he invented a printing procedure on leather and started creating patchworks of different materials, which he debuted in Paris. This innovative and revolutionary procedure grabbed the attention of major fashion houses, including Hermes and Pierre Cardin, Cavalli immediately got commissions from both.
At age 30, Cavalli presented his first collection at the Salon for Prêt-à-Porter in Paris and later brought it to the Palazzo Pitti in Florence and Milano Collezioni. In 1972, he opened his first boutique, located in Saint-Tropez, France. He pioneered a distinctive aesthetic characterized by exotic prints, luxurious fabrics, and a sensual silhouette, and his creations exuded a sense of extravagance, lavishness, and sexiness, capturing the hedonistic spirit of the era.
During the 1980s and 1990s, Cavalli’s reputation soared as he expanded his brand into an iconic global empire, covering a wide range of products including clothing, accessories, fragrance, and home furnishings. His runway shows became legendary spectacles, featuring an eclectic mix of exotic patterns and dramatic silhouettes. His designs celebrated the female form in all its glory, reveling in sensuality and seduction.
One of Cavalli’s most exciting achievements came in the ‘90s in the form of his invention of sand-blasted jeans, a technique that revolutionized denim production and catapulted him to international fame. In 1995, he worked with Lycra to invent stretch jeans, and it was only fitting that he launched Cavalli Jeans (later renamed Just Cavalli) in 2000.
The Hollywood elite eagerly sought – and continues to seek – his designs. He dressed superstars like Taylor Swift, Madonna, Zendaya, Beyonce, Victoria Beckham, and Jennifer Hudson.
