All You Need To Know About Chanel’s 2022/23 Cruise Collection

With Chanel Cruise 2022/23, Virginie Viard brings to life the spirit of the Riviera, characterised by freedom and sophistication. Inspired by the cosmopolitan beach lifestyle of Monte Carlo and the history of Chanel, which has seen some major milestones along the Côte d’Azur. Combined, they result in sophisticated silhouettes in this year’s presentation, where otherwise casual beachwear is wrapped in a veil of contemporary glamour.
As you probably know, January and February are the so-called “fashion months”, when new collections by well-known and lesser-known designers are presented in the world’s capitals (Milan, Paris, London and New York). May is also increasingly on the fashion calendar, when the most prestigious fashion houses present their Cruise collections, which take place in London’s summer destinations.
As the name suggests, the cruise collections were originally presented mid-season and aimed at the five-a-side clientele who cruised or travelled all year round during the transitional months. They were introduced around 100 years ago by the famous Coco Chanel, who became aware of the travel habits of her well-heeled clientele. Designed for customers who enjoyed the winter sun, the clothes traditionally combine elegance, functionality and seasonal flexibility.
Today, Cruise collections are designed for cultural change, with novelty as their basic premise. Launched in May and only hitting the shelves in November, these collections keep the attention of customers who have already explored the autumn collection, while at the same time excitingly anticipating an escape from winter and a leap to warmer destinations.

What did Chanel have in store for this year’s Cruise collection, presented on 5 May in timeless Monte Carlo?
In case you didn’t know, CHANEL’s history is interspersed with inspiring places that have helped to shape its style, define its codes and enhance its creativity. Among these emblematic sources of inspiration, Monte-Carlo holds a special place: its links with CHANEL began in 1910, when Gabrielle Chanel discovered the Principality of Monaco and its surroundings, and have been strengthened since the 1980s by Karl Lagerfeld.
